Endodontics (Root
Canal Treatment)
Root canal treatment is
required when the nerve of the tooth has become inflamed, damaged, or
infected. This treatment allows us to help you keep your tooth by removing the
damaged nerve and saving your tooth. It is always priority to maintain
your natural teeth for as long as possible.
A root canal infection may be associated with these symptoms:
- Moderate pain;
sensitivity to hot and cold, and chewing or biting
- Intense pain
- A swelling in the gums
that releases pus or blood upon applying pressure with your finger.
- Migrating or
irradiating pain that begins in one tooth and spreads to other areas
such as your jaw, head, other teeth, etc.
- Sometimes there may be no symptoms. Your soft tissues should be checked
routinely and x-rayed for signs of abnormalities that would go
undetected otherwise.
Years before, if you had a tooth with a diseased nerve, you'd
probably lose that tooth. But today, with a dental procedure called a
root canal you have a good chance to save the tooth. Inside each tooth is the pulp
which provides nutrients and nerves to the tooth. When the pulp is diseased or injured the
tissue dies. If the pulp is not removed and the canals not treated, the tooth
will become infected. This can result in the loss of the tooth.
After root canal treatment a crown is made to protect and restore the
function of the tooth.
