Crowns

Dental crowns are prosthetic teeth custom-made to fit right in with your naturally beautiful smile. They are a common solution for a number of dental concerns, including weakened, broken, or aesthetically imperfect teeth.

What Are Dental Crowns Used For?

  • Simple restorations. If one of your teeth has been fractured, severely chipped, or weakened by tooth decay, a dental crown may be necessary to restore full functionality.
  • Cosmetic improvements. If a tooth is discolored or misshapen, a dental crown can be used to improve the appearance of your smile.
  • Support for a bridge. Those who are missing one or more teeth may be recommended to have a dental bridge placed. Dental bridges require support from at least one tooth, typically in the form of a dental crown.

The Dental Crown Process

Before moving forward with a dental crown, our dentist near Woodland Hills will first need to examine your teeth to make sure that this is the perfect solution for your situation. This examination will typically involve a visual inspection of your mouth along with dental x-rays. Once you have been cleared for a dental crown, we will move forward to prepare your tooth.

Step 1: Tooth Preparation

Our dentist in Woodland Hills will begin by preparing your tooth for a crown with a surface reduction technique. By removing shallow sections of your tooth, your tooth will be better prepared to support an attractive and functional crown.

Step 2: Dental Impression

Once the reduction is complete, impressions of your teeth will be made in order to facilitate the creation of your crown. Using these impressions, our lab will be able to fabricate a dental crown that fits perfectly to your reduced tooth. After impressions are taken, we will fit your prepared tooth with a temporary, plastic crown that you can wear while you wait for your permanent crown to be made.

Step 3: Fit Confirmation

When your dental crown is ready, you will return to our dentist in Woodland Hills to have the fit confirmed. We will remove your temporary crown and place your permanent crown, checking to make sure that the crown fits perfectly against your prepared tooth. If adjustments need to be made, we will re-apply your temporary crown.

Step 4: Crown Application

Once your permanent dental crown has been perfected, we will attach it to your prepared tooth using a special dental cement. Our dentist in Woodland Hills will then provide you with instructions on how to care for your new crown at home.
